I have been pretty busy the last week or so doing the modification to my A-pillars to house the other pair of tweeters. So onto what I did.
Here is a shot of what I am working with...
Started by mocking up the mount of the tweeters after I had done it in the truck. I screwed them in right here to help hold them.
I didn't like the way the mounts stuck out, so I grabbed a pair of old mounts I had lying around and found out that the new tweeters I have would work in them, and still swivel in the sockets. So I decided to use these and mount them a little different. I took a hole saw that fit the O.D. and drill the hole for them to recess a little bit.
Then I used a 2 part plastic adhesive to fill in around them and help secure them in place.
I was going to wrap and glass them but was'nt happy with the shape I was getting so I decided to go another route. I had read before on hear about people using fiberglass reinforced filler doing this so I decided to go this route and see what happens. So I drilled a series of holes to help the filler grab and sanded the pillars down some.
A shot of what I used for filler..
Then I started laying the filler in layers to get a rough shape, and then started knocking it down. I also tried them back on the truck to make sure they still fit and didn't warp. And they fit just fine
Almost there..
Alittle glazing putty on the one, still working on the other one..
After getting them to where I was satisfied, I scrubbed them down real good, used some degreaser on them, and then hit them with some SEM plastic adhesion promoter. And then hit them with the high build primer.
Next in the process of course was to use the SEM texture coat on them.
And finally I sprayed the topcoat and gave them about 4 coats of satin clear today.
All in all I think they came out pretty good. I still like the fact that I can swivel the tweeter in all directions to help fine tune the sound, and the shape is what I was wanting. Got to do a little touch up paint on the one but that's it. Hopefully I can get them in and wired up this weekend.
Looks good. Im doing the same thing on my 88 c1500. same pillars. I was trying to see if I could get them flushed a little but, but that metal behind the pillar wont allow much space. I was thinking about even cutting some of the metal out just behind the tweeters so i could get them as flushed as possible...
looks good...how well did the color match the original interior? did you have problems with the original interiors color being faded compared to the new paint?
