I am in the process of shaving and tucking my engine bay. The scoop that is on the car right now will just direct road grime and debris right into the bay and I don't really want that. I am making a new scoop that will have mesh on the back side and then I'll close off the current scoop.
Started by taping the hood off to draw the design and then spray glued down some block styrofoam and sculpted it into shape. I didn't have my camera for this. I used a hacksaw blade for rough shaping and then sanded it with a long block to finish with straight lines.
The shop lights were not allowing for good pics of the foam so I turned off the lights.
Pulled the new scoop off and got the foam and foil out. Then I marked the hood where the scoop was to end up and sanded down to the fiberglass of the hood.
Looks good, great start. I've been thinking about doing something like this myself. After you have the edges sanded down to your liking, will you rivet it into place or use an epoxy to set it?
I'm going to be cutting away the hood that is underneath the scoop to make it functional and then glassing it from the back side as well. I hadn't planned on rivets or epoxy because it will be sandwiched together. Is this a bad idea? I had the fiberglass of the hood really roughed up for the top layer and will do the same on the back side.
I rough sanded the edges on the hood and shot some paint I had on it in order to see the shape a little better.
Then it was time to cut out the old scoop and reform the hood. I sectioned out the wedge from the sides and then danded everything flat to the fiberglass. I then riveted both pieces together to temporarily hold the middle section flush with the arch of the hood. I will fiberglass between the blocks and then remove them and fill that area.
Does it not flex, as I see the bonnet of yours ain't got much support running through the middle, just around the edges...
It has flexed horribly since I got the car. The hood was already a junction of two hoods and they cut all the ribs out. The new scoop has already begun adding support and I will add some more before all is said and done.
Been busy working and not posting pics. I got the old scoop glassed up. I cut out the old hood from under the new scoop and glassed over the whole thing from the back
I've been doing alot of other work but don't have the pics uploaded yet.
