Where to Start?

Basically I've always liked the Vauxhall Astra mk4 gsi bumper for as long as I've owned my non-gsi . Basically im looking to recreate the bumper as shown in the pictures from fibreglass, im pretty new to this and have been seeing many people moulding the foam on the vehicle and then fibreglassing over the top. Been thinking I could make a block from A-B foam then use it as a plug, basically im just after any tips or input so I can come up with a plan....

So far its make a block of A-B foam then carve the bumper into that, just concerned I wont get it right.

there is always a good chance of not getting it right. do you have the funds/resources to purchase another stock bumper and A-B foam that, and carve it? Less chances of not getting it right.

yeah i guess, investing in a new stock bumper is a definite possibility.

not a great pic but heres my car with the stock bumper, would you use the whole bumper in tact and a-b that then reshape the bumper to look more like the gsi or do you think cutting of the actual stock bumper could be needed?

Just a bit concerned about the different sizes and placement of the vented sections, hopefully im not just being stupid but the more i think about it at the minute the less clear of an idea on how to create it I have LOL

Do you want to make this for the experience or do you want to make it to save money buying it or is it something else like the front fender is no longer in production? If all you want is the end piece, knowing the price would go a long way to advising you on whether or not you're better off just saving up and buying the bumper with the look you want.

I honestly wouldn't recommend a bumper to a newbie or as a first project. Molding it is complex, one offing it is just slightly less complex but still complex, and your potential for failure and then rework is high. I'm not trying to discourage you if you want to learn and are willing to invest the time, effort, and money into the learning. However, if all you're after is the end product you're probably better off exercising financial discretion and buying it when you're able.

just really wanted to have a go, thats why i didnt wanna make it on the car incase it was whack lol; the aftermarket fibreglass replicas cost around £150 and the real deal your looking at like £300+, not sure why the bumpers are so expensive but hey.

If this is prob too hard of a project and it will just look silly any other suggestions for any beginner projects or anything?

Just don't tell me you'll be working on that Astra on the street! I used to live in place with on-street parking, doing any work on my car was a right pain, I tell you! And our lovely weather doesn't help either... Now got the garage, but can't use it for my projects, so just doing everything on driveway whenever it's possible... Which isn't often in my case... And my advice on that one is go to your local scrapyard, get a bumper (even damaged, different colour) for few quid, get yourself some foam from those guys Buy fibreglass supplies online UK - East Coast Fibreglass Supplies
Then shape the foam, put bumper on the car and then fiberglass on top (just make sure you do it while bumper is on the car, otherwise you'll get everything misshaped and it won't fit... or it will fit after long fight). Under any circumstances don't go for the foam in spray cans as you'll only waste your money...
