Removeable Tunnel Coverings????

I need to make the coverings removable on the center tunnel of the GTM so I can service the mechanical systems inside it. Currently it is covered with sheet aluminum. I’d like to also install a sound and heat suppressor (I.E. Dynamat, SecondSkin etc). My thought would be to install the Dynamat to the tunnel aluminum, then overlay it with a couple of layers or mat and resin,, pop that off then glue the carpet to the removable glass piece. After I would then screw it to the tunnel. Sound reasonable or do you have other thoughts?????

Thanks!

that would work. you'll just have to make the carpeted edge tuck up around the bottom so it's not a nasty edge hanging there. also you'll have to think of a nice way to attach it. I'm not big on having a bunch of bolt in the middle of my floor.

sounds good. dzuz fasteners, panel clips or magnets will work to hold it in place. you could also make tabs at one end(say the front) that have matching slots, then you'd only need one or two screws (in the back) to keep it from moving. be creative, alot of ways to hold something like that down.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. My biggest fear was popping a panel off the Dynamat and rattles. For attaching,,, I've been using rivit-nuts for most everything in the car,,, figured I use them for this as well. The top will slide under a lip on the top of the center console and the waterfall that covers the motor. This will keep it in place and hide the upper edge of the carpet. The bottom will wrap around to the floor and I'll rivit-ut it there. I'm thinking the floor mat will hide the bottom egde.

As a follw on.... the shape of these center tunnels is fairly complex. How difficult is it to shape carpet? Any tricks? Also,,, where can I order nice carpet from?

Thanks again!

there's two types of carpets, backed and unbacked. the stuff with no backing is generally easier to shape, but you only have once chance to lay it down. if you try to pull it up, you'll pull the nap out. Steaming helps to shape the carpet alot, but sometimes you need to seam(stitch) the carpet to make it conform right. usually it's a little of both that make it look great.
nothing really hard about it, just take your time.
