Lambo hinges....

I was curious if anyone has made their own set of lambo door hinges and what would be recommend for material grade and or any other how to info, links and such I can go by. I'm thinking about wanting a set. But paying $600-900 seems STEEP. My father in law has metal experience, but I want to come up with a plan to present to him.

Any advice greatly appreciated and or any other websites you've seen someone else make them.

ThX!

We used to sub lease space from the guys at Vertical Doors and watching their process was interesting. The material is mainly 1/2" plate steel that was laser cut and tig welded and there were a lot of little engineering tidbits (the hinge mechanism and the right gas strut to make the door go up smoothly) that make something work and not work. They also milled one of the pieces on a custom jig at a specific angle for the "swing out". If steel fabrication and experimentation is something you and your father in law want to get into, go for it, but you will still spend a good chunk of change on materials and quite a bit of time on this project to get it right... Having "steel experience" vs. having the proper machine tool setup, access and knowledge will be all the difference.

Cools, i am curious at this point. Was just thinking out loud. My father in law may have the plate steel. Wasn't sure what kind of process it would be. I have looked at some pics online in some detail and I can tell they look a little complex. So that why i was wondering if a detailed how to or something was out there.

The thought about the school is intriguing too. But I think we could figure something out if we to move forward with it.

But I can also see that buying a lesser cost kit would be the easiest way in the long run. I do appreciate all the feedback on it and will see where it goes. I probably wouldn't be doing anything for a while.

As for the ride, its 98 Hyundai Accent 2dr hatch.

when i did mine, i bought a used set off ebay.
i have some words of experience for you.
1. is the car is your DD DO NOT do it.
2. buy a kit that uses 2 longer gas struts, as opposed to 1 stumpier strut. my set had the single strut design and it was either hard to open, or hard to close, depending on the pressure. the 2 strut should offer a better lift/close relationship b/c of the longer draw on the strut. also having 2 struts allows you have much lower pressure in each, mine were in the neighbor hood of 600 psi and the seals blew a number of times (3 struts blew in 1 year).
3. the bolt on ones are tough to get them to stay put. the small shift at the hinge is enough to keep the latch from lining up.

Don't do it is my advise. I laugh when I see them now, they are out of style, got over played and now they are oldschool. Suicide doors that open up in reverse would be cooler.

i am with the played out school. when you have a bolt in or weld in kit for that matter, any one can and did do it. it takes more skill, in my opinion to door suicide doors. if you want to be different, figure out how to do suicide doors that will actually allow you to open the door and have it swing ALL the way back. like touching the rear panel.

but if its your DD, i wouldnt do it. i had a semi custom show truck and got hassled by the cops for shaving my door handles. apparently in cali it is against the law to have no door handles

im a fan of THESE. they call them gull wing, but theyre actually butterfly doors. gull wing are delorean style.

kinda like waxworkz said as far as skill goes, plus its not the out and up opening style of lambo doors. not so over played either.
