Time between gelcoat and layup

Hey guys, I have a question about a project I'm in the middle of

I'm basically making a box with a male plug mold. Sides are tapered and the surface is waxed and PVAed. I sprayed gelcoat on just about an hour ago....was supposed to get it done this morning but life got in the way. Anyhoo, I believe it's almost there where the coat is tacky but not sticking to my finger and it will be ready for the supporting layup layers of FG using polyester resin. (Gelcoat is the clear UScomposites brand and I thinned it with 10% styrene.

Anyway. There is NO way I can glass it just now....earliest I might be able to get to it may be tomorrow afternoon...maybe. Did I just screw up or do I have a window in which I'll still be able to do the fiberglass layup? BTW, gelcoat has no wax in it.

Unfortunately it still stinks and has to stay in the garage. So hopefully it cures tonight before the temp drops below 65.

Any help is appreciated.

G

Why did you thin it? No worries, I've laid up on gel coat that was days old. I smear excess gel coat on he backs of my molds, and later lay excess resin on that. As long as its clean, and it's lamnating resin, you should be fine.

I was spraying the gelcoat and the it was recomended by the manufacturer that the gc be thinned w/ 10% styrene. I really have no prior experience and only a quart of gelcoat so i took the recomendation. I used a 2.5 mm spray gun and it seemed to do just fine.

Thanks for the info. There is minimal dust and particles from the air on the surface of the gc which im not worried about. I'll just lay up mat and layup resin later this week. Whew, glad i dont have to worry.

I should try thinning it when I brush it. I used a dump gun to spray, and never thin it. It may be time to get another cheap spray gun from HF when the dump gun gets too old.
