questions about actuators????

Hey guys not sure if this is in the right section. I'm going to be starting a build in a few weeks or so, well its in the works now but just different sections. Re-doing my whole trunk set up. I wanted to have a false floor in the back and cut out holes and have a switch set up so when I flip it my SNES game remotes rise out of the holes in the false floor. was going to fiberglass the controllers to have a mold to sit in, and than attach those to some pvc pipes(painting it green to look like they are sitting on a warp pipe)

Wanted to hook a actuator up to them. needed to know a few things since I have never used one before

can i just use one actuator and have a 2x4 going across and the pvc pipe on each end so each side rises together and just put the actuator in the middle.

Where should I look for a actuator. I looked on ebay but can i trust those. also i don't need it to lift alot of weight maybe 5lbs.

not sure if you can understand what I am attempting to do, I did my best to describe it in words.

if you want to use just one actuator, you're best bet is to build a small lobe or cam type set up. not just a hinge. i have used one to lift way more than 5lbs and have never had an issue. both ends will have to be on pivots so it wont bind. wish i could draw it out but i dont have any way to as my desk with PS crashed.

Linear Actuators, Linear Motors, Micro motors, Electric Motors - I used these to lift the canopy on the Sterling.

ok so now that my doors are done and my amp rack time to work on the back peice of the trunk. I wanted snes remotes to rise out of the floor. looked into some acuators for this. i was going to mount the acutator straight up and have it raise a peice of pvc pipe that holds the remote controls but then i would only be able to lift one remote at a time. I want two to come up at the same time with the same acutator. they are a $100 so didn't want to have to buy two to raise each remote. I was trying to figure out how to mount the acuator on the floor horizontal and have it push some hinge system to lift the remotes up. any ideas or thouhts

A scissor jack type of mechanism should do the trick. think back to the old cartoons with the extendable mallet or boxing glove that SHOOTS out. know what I mean? Connect 1 actuator to one of the ends, as it moves in and out (horizontally) it will push the scissor jack up and down. got it?

still in the planning stage with this one, but i did manage to find a cheap actuator on ebay for only $30 shipped. Not sure if anyone has heard of this brand its called Duff Norton min pac linear actuator. The seller says it came out of a wheel chair. I haven't bid yet here is the listing

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

let me know if its worth getting. It can hand way way more then i need it to. Maybe im lifting 5lbs.

We use some Duff Norton stuff at work. It is industrial stuff, so I wouldn't be scared of the quality or durability. They have a website and that unit looks like an MPD series. You can read some of the specs like speed, physical size, current draw etc...

The guy says he can send the manual so try to get it or at least a full model number and look up the info. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Yeah he sent me the manual. It seemed pretty intense. I mean for $30 if it don't work where I was going to put it I'm sure I can find some other way to use it. I really didn't want to spend $120 on a actuator so this looks like a deal

I usually build my own lever systems when using actuators. I just made one in my son's car for a simpler setup than you are thinking, but levers are actuator's best friends. I have configured some pretty wicked stuff with those. Spend a little time on Google checking out "levers and physics" every time I get stuck I go back to the laws of physics and it helps me figures things out.

As a last bit of input, I know you already bought the actuator, but I picture doing what you want with a power window motor, a gear toothed track, and a wedge lever. It sounds really cool. of course you can always use an actuator in place of the motor.

Good luck.
